CMO WESTIES NEEDED!!!!

I have recent information from our researchers in Switzerland on CMO. The group from Berne has combined efforts with researchers in Helsinki, Finland and have identified CMO to chromosome 5. They have narrowed it to an area of 10 genes. Not surprising, it is a complex sequence. Each additional case of CMO with normal relatives could be the case that would help unravel the mystery. If you are aware of a CMO affected dog that has yet contributed blood to the study, please contact me. The researchers from Berne, Helsinki and Dr. Pat will be presenting their research at the upcoming meeting on dog and cat genomics meeting in Sweden.

Kay McGuire, DVM

(More information on the study can be found by clicking on our menu link "Medical" and then "You Can Help". Or contact me at "bew1234@sbcglobal.net" and I will get you in touch with Dr. McGuire.)

MISSION STATEMENT
Westie Rescue Michigan (as an arm of West Highland White Terrier Club of Southeastern Michigan) is a State of Michigan non-profit organization. (We are currently in the process of applying for a State of Michigan Non-Profit Status separate from the Club so we can obtain Federal 501c3 status.) Our primary goal is to be the safety net for all homeless Michigan Westies who do not have a responsible breeder who will stand behind them in their time of need.

We accomplish this goal by caring for those in need through our foster-care system, supplying medical, emotional and behavioral care for these animals and eventually finding permanent homes for those who are safely adoptable and euthanizing those determined to be unsafe or too sick to have a good quality of life. We spay/neuter all animals who come through our program, prior to adoption unless medically counter indicated.

We advocate abolishing pound seizure and are against animal cruelty. Westie Rescue Michigan supports humane education programs for the public and encourages respect and compassion for all animals. We raise funds to support our efforts and, on occasion, to support similar efforts of other groups. We may also use these funds to support medical research meant to benefit the breed.

11/4/10 Koda's Law (the bill at the above link) passed the House but was held up in the Senate and died at the end of the last session and must be reintroduced. We will post here when that happens. In the meantime, CLICK HERE to read about our own Michigan Class "B" dealer who has a vested interest in defeating this bill.

WHAT IS A WESTIE?

Each breed has a "standard" which defines what the perfect dog of this breed would be like. This standard is what dogs are judged against in AKC conformation shows. Rescued Westies are not going to match this standard perfectly but it does give you a good understanding of what a Westie should look and act like. The photos below are just a few of our Rescued Westies. You will see quite a bit of variance in their looks but will give you a general idea of what to expect. IF YOU WANT A SHOW QUALITY WESTIE, you will not find it in a Rescue dog. But you will find some very nice pet Westies.

Click on the photos below (of Westies adopted by some of our foster homes) to either read the Westie Breed Standard or to read Westie 101.
