2006 FOSTER PHOTOS

Lady

Years ago, when we were still doing referrals rather than fostering, Lady was in another Rescue. We sent her mom to that Rescue and she adopted her. Now, when Lady is 13 years old, her mom died and Lady needed a home. Her mom was sick for quite some time and Lady boarded with a Club Member during that period. Now, that Club Member has agreed to foster Lady, probably for the rest of her life. Lady is elderly and incontinent. She may have cancer. Her incontinence is not "curable". She isn't likely to be adopted but we feel responsible for her. She will stay where she is loved and comfortable.

Lady passed on May 17, 2006 of complications from her cancer. She had a very comfortable and happy end to her life while in foster care and will be missed.

Casey's mom died. Her family did not want him so they took him to a shelter who turned him over to us. The grandson guessed his age to be 10 and provided no records. Our vet is quite confident that he is really around six years old. He is currently being treated for ear and dental infections. In a couple of weeks he will have a dental and they hope his ears will be cleared up so they can see down the canal while he is under. Casey has "foggy" eyes. We see this occasionally but this condition does not affect his ability to see.

Casey was adopted and now lives with a sister Westie and his parents and enjoys an expecially "indulged" lifestyle. ******************************************

Jake is one of the rare puppies to come to Rescue. As is usually the case when we get very young puppies, he arrived very sick. He came close to death but has made a remarkable turnaround. To read Jake's story, please go to JAKE
NOTE: Jake has been adopted.

Emily Elizabeth was found on the side of the road. She was taken to a vet by the person who found her and then turned in to the local shelter. The shelter contacted Rescue. When we got Emily Elizabeth (named by her foster parents), we knew she was dirty and matted but quickly we realized there was a lot more wrong with her. Instead of heading to the groomer, she went immediately to the vet. Testing revealed an 11 to 12 year old dog with:
Enlarged liver
Enlarged heart
Thickening of the bronchial tubes
Ear infection
Skin issues
Tumor in the rectal area-could be cancer
Possible tumor on the intestine, would need an ultrasound to confirm
Coccidia
Fleas
Dental needed
Something wrong with back end, possible arthritis

We had to make a heartbreaking decision to let her go to the bridge. She had already suffered enough for any one dog. What kind of person thought it would be better to dump her on the side of the road instead of holding her while she went on to the bridge?

Mitzy came to us when her parents decided to move and didn't feel they could take her with them. Mitzy is a senior dog, age 13. Her foster mom took her in and fell in love with her so Mitzy has joined the family which now consists of 4 Westies and 2 cats! All get along very well.

Chapin, age 4, arrived in rescue because he was not doing well with the toddler in the family and a new baby was expected. Chapin was a very nice but shy little boy who has a hard time with new situations. He will be fine in a quieter home without toddlers. Chapin also has the usual "westie rescue allergies and skin" issues. After just a week or so of regular bathing, his skin began to improve. He also had eye and ear infections which are being treated. Chapin is living in a foster home which has dogs, ducks and chickens and has had no problem adjusting. He goes to work each day with foster mom in a doggie daycare center. Note: Chapin's foster mom has asked to adopt him since he fits into her family so well.

You may have noted that several times the foster dog has stayed in the foster home and been adopted. Foster work offers only the reward of knowing you are helping a dog find a better life. There really are no "perks" to give to the people who are volunteering their time, efforts and emotions to help these dogs other than we can allow them to have first chance to adopt their foster dog. We do this with strings. For instance, in order to adopt your foster dog, you must agree to continue fostering for us.

Princess is 4 years old and on the small side (13 pounds). Her parents got her when they were available to be with her a lot. However, her dad recently died and her mom is working. Princess was alone a lot.

Princess is a very sweet little girl but she does have one problem. She is not fully housebroken. The vet believes this is behavioral and not medical. Princess gets along well with other dogs although she would like to demand more than her share of "human attention". She seems to be a typical Westie. Her new family would need to spend time on her house training. She needs someone who will be home to take her out frequently. Her family needs to be accepting of diapers if she cannot be completely housebroken.

As of October 8, Princess has been adopted into a home where they understand her housebreaking issues and are willing to work with her on it.

Tinkerbell is a very nice little 6-year-old girl who is well-socialized. She is living well with other Westies. (She plays with and keeps up with a ten month old puppy in her foster home.) She came from a home with children and cats and was not having problems with either. (Note: We do not adopt to families with children under the age of ten regardless.)

She attended a fun dog show with our Club; spent the day with 20 other Westies without any problem. She even won her class in the show because she moved along so nicely in the ring!

Her family had to give her up because she has a disease called Addison's and they were unable to afford the medications that keep her well.

Tinker requires a shot every 25 days (at a cost of about $40). She have weaned her off it Pred altogether except in situations which we anticipate will be stressful. She is a dog who shows no sign of the disease as long as she receives proper care. Everyone who has met Tinker has commented on what a nice little girl she is. She would love to have a human who would be a home for her and would have plenty of lap time to share with her. (Her hair was cut very short when she came in but it is filling in nicely now. She has had a dental and is ready to go to a new home whenever we find just the right family for her.)

Great News! Tinkerbell has found her forever home. She is now a sibling to a Great Dane and a mix who is about her size. It is very entertaining to see her setting the rules for the Great Dane! Her mom and dad have volunteered to foster for us so we had a "double win"!!

Tinkerbell has now been adopted.

Holli Hannah is nearly three years old. She was surrendered to rescue because she was having problems with children. She is not well socialized with children or other dogs. After a short time in her foster home, she settled in and became friends with her foster sister. Foster Mom found she could not resist her and has now adopted her. Holli's new name is Holly Golightly.

Jesso's family lost their employment and were forced to cut expenses. Jesso is ten months old and very much needed neutering. After neutering and with a little training, he became a very nice little boy (14#) and has been adopted by a lucky family. Jesso is very, very active and now enjoys playing with his older Westie brother.

Becky is 11 1/2 years of age. Her owner has gone into an assisted living situation and has been unable to provide proper care for Becky for some time. She realized her limitations and agreed to surrender Becky. Becky came into Rescue and is being fostered currently. She had never been socialized with other dogs and, while she is not fighting, she is very nervous around other dogs. We believe she will do best as an "only child" for someone who would like a sweet little girl to keep them company. Becky is in good health and up-to-date on her medical care. She would simply like to have someone to love during her remaining years. Becky knows that her adopter will need to be someone whose heart is big enough to be able to love her despite her age. Remember that many Westies live to age 15 and some even beyond.

Becky has found a home where she is the youngest of three Westies! Someone had a very big heart indeed!

Crosby was found as a stray. After the legal hold period was up, the shelter turned him over to us. Crosby is very tiny, all of 10.1#. It is possible that there is something other than Westie in him since he is so small and his hair is extremely soft and curly. He isn't as "blocky" as most Westies (very light boned rather than that sturdy feel we are used to), but in Rescue where we get mostly Westies from puppy mills, we are used to seeing a lot of Westies who have differences from standard. Based on looks, we are calling him a Westie.

Crosby is a very loving little boy who acts as though he was someone's much loved pet. He is doing well with the other dogs in the pack. His health is good. His age is estimated to be 2-3 years old. He is somewhat vocal....will make a great watchdog! But overall he is not unusually "barky" by Westie standards.

CRosby is very protective of his "mom", especially in his home. His foster mom is working hard and has seen a lot of progress. We hope to place him sometime after the first of the year.

Barney (estimated to be 6 years or so) was turned in to a shelter as a stray. He was then turned over to Rescue while he recovers from a skin issue common to rescued Westies. Barney is a nice little boy who is doing well in his foster home. He has had a dental and had a couple of tumors removed while under. His hair is coming back in nicely.

This little man will be good for someone that is home most of the time and wants a lap dog. He loves to be held. He is also good with cats and seems happy when he see kids. (We don't leave him unattended when kids are around and do not adopt to homes with children under the age of ten.) The bent ear is due to thick cartlidge, possible where he had a tumor removed.

Barney has now found his new mom, just in time for the holidays!

Katie's family decided to divorce. Three-year-old Katie went with mom and that was okay for a while but when Mom needed to find a job and a smaller apartment, there was no time or place for Katie. She is a sweet girl who is a bit timid. But as she becomes accustomed to her foster home, she has now begun to play with her two foster brothers. She is ready to be adopted but we are looking for a home where someone will be home during the day and where, if there is another dog in the home, the dog is mild mannered. (Katie has now been adopted)

******************************************

Diamond, age 6, came into rescue because she wasn't doing well with the young children in her home. She is being fostered with three other Westies and a larger dog. Diamond is doing quite well but would like to be "doggie bosS". She doesn't care for it if another dog gets in her space uninvited. We are looking for a home where she can be an only dog or where the other dog is larger. Diamond might not be able to last all day while the owner works so it would be best if she had a stay-at-home person or someone who is gone for only half a day at most. (Diamond has now been adopted)

******************************************

Lily (age estimated to be around 2) ran loose in the neighborhood for weeks before she was finally turned in to the shelter. She was pulled from there and is now in foster care. Her coat was so matted, she had to be shaved down. And she has a mild case of heartworm which is now being treated. Lily eventually was adopted and is enjoying a lot of attention in her new home.

Kirby was a Florida stray, found by a kind lady who saw him enter a garage where someone poured oil on him and chased him out. Because there is no Florida Rescue, she contacted national and Michigan agreed to "mentor" a Florida couple who are club breeders and who agreed to foster Kirby. Kirby spend several weeks with this couple and eventually found a new home with a couple who lived in the same general area. Kirby now lives a wonderful life with this couple in his own Florida "resort"!

******************************************

Chumley, age 6, arrived in Rescue when his owner became ill. She was unable to care for Chumley and for the last six months, he has been living in his crate 24/7 except for rest breaks. She is now in the hospital and will go into care; since she isn't likely to ever come home again, she agreed to surrender Chumley to rescue where he can find a new home.

Chumley has turned out to be a very nice, laid back Westie. His ears are down and will probably never "come up". But his spirit is up all the time. Read about his adoption story....the article was printed in the Imprint which is the National Westie Club official Magazine. Click HERE
